BEWARE YOUR BOXING DAY PARKING MAY NOT BE FREE
December 16th, 2009
London councils were facing a backlash from motorists today after it emerged almost half of local authorities will refuse to treat Boxing Day as a bank holiday and allow people to park free.
Campaigners warned thousands of drivers across the capital would be hit with £120 fines while shopping or visiting relatives because they would assume parking charges will be waived as usual on 26 December.
Shoppers traditionally flock to the West End and high streets on the day after Christmas to take advantage of free roadside parking and snap up bargains in the sales.
But as Boxing Day falls on a Saturday this year, 16 London councils – including Westminster and Kensington & Chelsea – insist motorists will have to pay the same as any other weekend, despite signs stating that public and bank holidays are free of charge.
Wardens will be patrolling the streets on Boxing Day to catch anyone falling foul of restrictions. Taken from London Evening Standard (15/12/09)
